What’s Tumbling for June?

June 6, 2017

From the Prez.

Tomorrow June 7th the shop will be open from 4:30 pm to 7:30 pm to talk rocks, lapidary and jewelry or use the equipment if you wish. Joe will have the shop open June 14th from 1 pm to 4 pm for those who need to use the equipment.

June 21st, I will have the shop open from 4:30 pm to 6:00 pm. for equipment use. Then I will demonstrate how to make copper jewelry settings for your cabs using minimal equipment from 6:00 pm to 7:30pm or whenever you run out of questions. I will try to make an opportunity for those present to do a little hand on work as time allows.

On the third Wed of July Lynn Dalton will do a demonstration on cabbing and I am anxious to see his techniques as we all have different methods and can always learn something new from each other.

For those who didn’t attend the June first meeting you missed an interesting and informative presentation by Theron on when and how Septarian nodules formed. He brought rough, cut, and some polished samples from last month’s dig at Orderville plus some from the Moab area that have a different crystal filling for comparison. They were more white than the yellow calcite from Orderville. Sorry you missed that as Theron did a good job and there was a lively question and answer session at the end.

This month’s rock trip is set for Friday June 23rd. This will be a 3-day trip to the Topaz Mt area with overnight camping a short distance off the pavement at the southern end of Topaz Mt. There are numerous rocks and minerals in the area and Theron will be going up the day before to scout locations so we can hunt/dig for a variety of materials.

Jana, myself and some others will be staying in Delta and commuting to the dig sites as we are not good campers with the hot nights, but we do intend to join the group around the evening camp fire for rock talk and tall tales about the one that was so big it couldn’t even be moved with an excavator.

MORE INFO TO COME on food, accommodations meeting place and collecting so stay tuned.

There will be a sign-up sheet at the July 6th meeting for help at the Iron Co Fair at the Fair Grounds in Parowan. Don’t forget we still need rocks for the kids at the Co. Fair Aug 31st, Tailgate Show Sept 23rd and Hurricane Rock Show in November.  There have been some generous donations but we will need more to cover the three events. There is especially a need for rough rock, mineral specimens, cabs, and finished jewelry for the club fund raising sale at these events. A piece or two from each if us won’t put a strain on any of us and we can make these events a success.

By the way we will have a 10 ft. by 2 ft. banner with the club logo for these events as well as future shows plus the annual Club Picnic August 26th  at Main Street Park Cedar City.  (Almost Forgot That)  My mind’s numb at this point so—-

Till Later, Tracy
